Alright, let’s cut the fluff and get straight to it. (I’ll be using the word "NEED" a lot to drive this home).
When you go to buy a computer, what do you hear?
…Gigabytes, megabytes, terabytes, high-speeds... It’s all just gibberish.
If you’re not tech-savvy, it doesn’t make any sense.
What you really want to know is, “Can this computer help me do my work faster? Can it help me play my favorite games without lagging?”
…Right?
Because that’s what you NEED.
And this is where it gets interesting. You see, most salespeople will bombard you with all that technical mumbo-jumbo.
But the savvy ones—the ones who really know how to make you whip out your wallet—focus on your needs.
They show you how this shiny new gadget will solve your problems and make your life easier.
What I’m about to share could change the way you sell anything, forever…
The Secret to Selling Anything
Selling the need is like being a mind-reader. You’re not just throwing stuff at people and hoping it sticks. You’re making them realize they NEED what you’ve got.
Ever heard the phrase, “Sell me this pen”? Most folks start babbling about how the pen is blue, durable, or made of plastic. But that’s not what sells a pen.
To sell a pen, you’ve got to make people realize they NEED to write things down.
“But I already have a pen,” you say.
“Sure, but what if you lose it? What if you need to write more things down? How will you jot down your ideas? Imagine writing the next Harry Potter! You could be the next J.K. Rowling. But you NEED a pen to do that.”
A Mistake That Will Cost You A Fortune
Coffee shops make this mistake all the time. They often miss the mark. They sell on price, fancy decor, or trendy cups.
But they forget the most important thing… the NEED.
Put a big sign outside a coffee shop that says, “Tired? Get a Warm, Energizing Coffee Here!”
Most people are tired and stressed. They NEED that coffee to wake up and feel better.
Look, even if you’re selling raspberries, you have to sell the need.
…“Why do I need raspberries?” you might ask.
“Because they’re delicious, packed with vitamins, and boost your immune system. They’re like little super berries!”
People buy things they need.
They sometimes buy things they want, but they always buy things they need. So, no matter what you’re selling, find a way to make people realize they NEED it.
How to Sell the Need Like a Grizzled Veteran
Alright, let’s break it down. Here’s how you do it:
Who are you talking to? If they love coffee, don’t try to sell them tea.
What’s bugging them? Are they bored, hungry, tired, etc?
Show how your thing fixes their problem. “This coffee will wake you up and get RID of your terrible aching headache!”
Whether it’s a pen, a drill, a computer, coffee, or raspberries, the key is to focus on the need.
Always remember, it’s the need that sells, not the product.
Keep your focus on the need at all times. Never take your eye off the prize. If you can make people see how much they need what you’re selling, they’ll be eager to buy it.
So, next time you’re trying to sell something, don’t just talk about the features. Talk about why people need it. Trust me, it makes all the difference.
